Toki ni Makasete (Leave it to Time)

Made possible through a commission from Sony Music Japan, this stop-motion animated music video brings to life the lyrics of Sachiko Kanenobu’s song Toki ni Makasete (Leave it to Time), for the December 25, 2024 launch of Kanenobu’s remastered Toki ni Makasete: Raretracks album (Sony Music Japan). The 2024 remastered, reissued Toki ni Makasete: Raretracks (Sony Records) includes two additional songs, a new cover design, and liner notes which include a 2023 interview with Kanenobu.

The original recording of Toki ni Makasete was on Misora, Kanenobu’s iconic 1972 album (URC Records). The song Toki ni Makasete was released a second time in 1998 and again in 2000 on Toki ni Makasete: Raretracks, a compelation album of Kanenobu songs (URC, Pony Canyon).

Like many of Kanenobu’s songs, the lyrics for Toki ni Makasete: were borne out of Kanenobu’s personal reflections; are relatable to diverse, wide audiences; and continue to provide relevant themes for contemplation in the present day.

Music Video Artist Notes

Rarely does an opportunity present itself for me to draw on this particular, perhaps peculiar combination of working knowledge and life skills to roll into one project: days/weeks/months of experience spent on a football field practicing marching band formation drills; script supervision for commercials and educational film shorts; a life-long love of paper crafting; production and stage managing theater productions; backyard gardening; photography; graphic design; video editing; and a knack for visual storytelling — yet here we are.

Song Lyrics (English Translation)

It’s a waste of time to check up on things / When your thoughts come, let them come/ When your feelings come, let them come / Just do it right and leave it to time / Everything will be resolved, time will tell

Rather than thinking too much about this or that / Find your humor and laugh at it / Take it easy and lean on time / Everything will be clear in time / Time will tell / Leave it to time

Let your past go, let it pass / When you remember things / Just remember it’s all right / Be relaxed and leave it to time / Time will tell / Leave it to time

Thank You
